Characteristics of Thornless Clone in Aralia elata

Abstract

|
This experiment was carried out to investigate characteristics of the newly selected thornless clone in comparison with those of thorny one in Aralia elata.
Sprouting time in spring was 3 to 4 days earlier in the thorny line than in the thornless one. Harvesting time of the shoot at the optimum size was delayed about 10 days in the thornless line compared with the thorny one.
Length of the stem grown for one year was slightly long in the selected thornless line. Bark color of the thorny lines was blackish grey and brown, but that of thornless line was greyish green brown.
Flowering time was late 2 to 3 days in the thornless line compared with the thorny ones. But the number of petals, stamens, pistils, seeds a pod were not different between thorny and thornless lines. In case of thornless line, there was little thorns on the stem without regard to age of stems or petiole.
